Savoring solo: Ideal spots for dining alone

One, it turns out, is not the loneliest number – at least not when it comes to dining. One can be company and two a crowd. Solo dining is a growing trend, thanks to the rise of remote work and a pan-generational desire for increased independence – the freedom to make unfettered decisions as to where to eat, when to eat and what to order. Regulars at several local spots are often solo.

At Bear Flag Fish Co., according to barman Jacob Vetter, someone might order a succession of smaller items, “a taco with one type of fish, poke featuring another, then the cioppino.” The patio is a shaded oasis of calm. Sit inside and you’ll never feel alone: A dozen fish sculptures seem to swim overhead.

The “comfort” at upscale comfort eatery Great Maple translates to tufted vegan leather seats and to menu items such as the fried chicken and doughnuts and maple-bacon old-fashioned. There’s sports-viewing in the bar and people-watching from the Nordstrom Court-adjacent patio.

It’s hard to feel solitary at bustling Tommy Bahama – especially at the island bar, where no matter where you sit, you see other faces. Need space? Opt for the high-tops or tables. Need peace? Head for the chill patio. Ideal company wherever: the Cuban sandwich with mojo pork and Gruyère cheese.
