Top quiche: Chaupain and Pandor bakeries
At its most basic, a quiche is a savory tart with a custard-like filling baked in a pastry crust. Its origin is French; its most famous version, quiche Lorraine – made with eggs, cream, bacon and, sometimes, cheese – originates from the Lorraine region in northeastern France.
The quiche at two artisan bakery-cafes in Newport Beach is not basic.
Chaupain Bakery at Newport Hills Shopping Center offers three quiche versions, each spectacular: mushroom, bacon and leek; spinach and cheese; and ham and bacon. Order it individually and a generous wedge arrives with three petit baguette slices and a side salad; a whole pie makes an ideal brunch for an entire table. While you’re there, try the croissants, which many consider the county’s best. You’ll also find pastries such as eclairs, millefeuilles and tarts.
Among its French breakfast and brunch offerings, Pandor Artisan Bakery and Café at Westcliff Plaza offers four regional quiche styles, also available by the slice or whole. They include quiche Lorraine with leeks, bacon and cheese; quiche Florentine with Parmesan, spinach and shallots; quiche Mediterranean with sun-dried tomato, basil and goat cheese; and a quiche du jour. All come with organic green salad or French fries. Crepes and pastries are draws, too.
