Toast of the Coast: Javier’s Tequila

Where better to celebrate Cinco de Mayo than a restaurant that has its own tequila? That would be Javier’s at Crystal Cove Shopping Center.

The tequila, called Javier’s, is made by the González family that formerly made Don Julio – in turn named for founder Don Julio González and widely considered to be the first luxury tequila.

Four Javier Reserva bottlings include the Blanco, Reposado, Cristalino and new Cristalino Añejo. You can have any of those tequilas neat or on an ice sphere.

The house margarita, made with the Blanco, is aptly called the Casa; there are jalapeño, cucumber, tamarind and pineapple versions.

The Cristalino margarita uses the oak-aged but crystal clear Cristalino Añejo, dubbed 1995 to honor the year of the restaurant’s founding in Laguna Beach.

The release of the 1995 coincided with last year’s spectacular redo of the restaurant’s patio. The gorgeous space doubled in size. Its ceilings are higher, its colors more sophisticated and its floor stunningly embedded with multihued pebbles. Large windows look out past floral-inspired fire features to the Pacific Ocean. New palm trees include the centerpiece of a rotunda seating 30.

No matter where you sit, it feels like you’re on a resort vacation.
