Peak Coastal Experience: Crystal Cove State Park

Coveys of quail scurry across the trail, a red-tail hawk perches on a post and cottontails frolic. Aromatic sage is punctuated by the maple-syrup fragrance of the California everlasting herb. In spring, dazzling mustard flowers transform the hillsides. Pacific Ocean views impress year-round.
Those are just a few of the highlights of several popular hikes from the top of Newport Coast to the Pacific Ocean or vice versa.
Depending on where you start, there’s street parking near Pacific Ridge Trailhead atop Crystal Cove State Park or paid parking at the Moro Canyon day-use lot near a beach-access tunnel. It’s all preserved open space on the historic Irvine Ranch.
From the trailhead, descend Pacific Ridge Trail, No Name Ridge and No Dogs; turn southeast past the ranger station and descend to Moro Canyon. Enjoy a respite on the beach, then retrace your steps. It’s mostly uphill from there!
Or return via the longer Moro Canyon or Moro Ridge trails to Bommer Ridge. Or reverse any of those itineraries and end near the beach. There are lots of route options, ranging from 7 to 11 miles. All outings are equally satisfying, whether you begin with the ascent or descent.
Deciding where you’d like to relax and refuel afterward might determine your starting point. Coastal dining venues include Parakeet Café and Bear Flag Fish Company at Crystal Cove Shopping Center. Down the hill from the trailhead is Zov’s at Newport Coast Shopping Center.
