Jazzed for Summer
Live on the Lawn, a series of live concerts in the Neiman Marcus-Bloomingdale’s courtyard at Fashion Island, concludes Aug. 9. Programs present the best and most innovative up-and-coming Los Angeles jazz musicians on a truly vibrant scene.
Capping a summer of success, the final event features the most established among the artists, who take the gazebo stage from 4-7 p.m.:
• Organist/multi-instrumentalist Wil Blades has released several albums as a bandleader including “Sketchy” and “Field Notes.”
• Grammy Award-winning drummer Gene Coye has toured and performed with Seal, Larry Carlton and Hiromi’s SonicWonder.
• Saxophonist Danny Janklow, also a Grammy winner, blends jazz with R&B, funk and indie soul. He has collaborated with Stevie Wonder and Herbie Hancock.
“This season has been eye-opening for everyone involved,” says Ryan Julio of ETA Presents, the promoter who curated the concerts. “I think the musicians were thinking this music is not for everyone, but once they saw how invested people were, they realized what a great opportunity it was to expand their audience. Everyone wants to know more about them.”
Enjoy rare grooves and vinyl deejay jams between each of the sets. Attendees can bring blankets and purchase cocktails, mocktails and grab-and-go meals from restaurants including Bloomingdale’s 59th & Lex, Mendocino Farms and Scratch Bakery Cafe. Lawn space is first-come, first-served. Tickets at eventbrite.com/e/live-on-the-lawn-at-fashion-island-tickets-1357760160189
