Welcome to the Holidays

The most wonderful time of the year is officially here, and festivities will soon be on full display at Fashion Island. While the forecast in Newport Beach does not include a blanket of snow, we have everything else to make your holidays a truly memorable time to spend with family and friends.

This is where our community gathers to celebrate, share wish lists with Santa, linger over dinner with friends and shop for those perfect gifts, all while making memories to last a lifetime.

I invite everyone in the community to come and enjoy the many experiences we have planned. Look inside this issue to help plan your visits, as well as for holiday shopping and gift-giving inspiration. I hope to see you all at our tree lightings, on Black Friday and throughout the holidays.

We wish you and yours a season filled with warmth, joy and delight.

Whether you’re shopping, celebrating with loved ones or simply want to get in the spirit, Fashion Island has a calendar filled with reasons to smile this season.

Get into the spirit with our California-themed carolers, bringing festive songs and live music to shoppers soaking up seaside vibes and finding the perfect gifts at Crystal Cove Shopping Center.

Orange County’s favorite open-air ice skating rink is set next to the 78-foot-tall tree and near the iconic Giant Wheel at Irvine Spectrum Center. Fashion-forward shoppers know they can find cutting-edge brands and family-friendly holiday experiences at the popular outdoor shopping center.

Some menu offerings make us feel warm in spirit, no matter the season. These options are ideal for celebrating special moments, upholding longstanding traditions or inspiring new ones — festive whether it’s a holiday or not. Here are favorites for five courses.

Cocktails

A generous cocktail always feels festive; at Mastro’s, each shaker essentially pours two. Live music in the O Bar adds to the occasion. Prepared tableside with dry ice, the off-menu lemon drop dramatically bubbles and “smokes.” On-menu: the Get Loose with the Goose vodka martini with caper berries. Served in December: Under the Mistletoe, with raspberries, rosemary sprigs and Rémy 1738 Accord Royale Cognac.

Starters

Popovers aren’t listed on the menu at this chic spot atop Neiman Marcus, yet they’re its signature offering and reason enough to go. The swoon worthy complimentary rolls that begin every meal at Mariposa are light, airy and served with strawberry butter and chicken broth. The restaurant is adjacent to the luxe retailer’s spectacular holiday decor offerings.

First Course

For the delicacy that makes any meal a celebration, Ocean 48 at Fashion Island offers three grades of osetra caviar — Siberian, Royal or Imperial by Sasanian — with fresh blinis and accompaniments. A glass of Dom Perignon goes well. Caviar cones present the exquisite sturgeon roe with horseradish crème fraiche and gold leaf.

Entree

Paella, the national dish of Spain, is invariably the center of attention. At Bayside, which recently marked its 25th anniversary, the vermillion hues and rich flavors of saffron-imbued acquerello rice mix with vibrant tastes, colors and textures from an array of ingredients — halibut, scallops, mussels, chorizo and piquillo pepper among them — to dress up any occasion. Bonus: The venue is steps from boat parade viewing.

Dessert

A pavlova is a meringue-based dessert; a vacherin suggests an ice cream cake. Amelia Marneau, pastry chef/co-owner at the French bistro, goes beyond the best of both with Between a Pavlova and a Vacherin. The gorgeous construct stars grapefruit in several guises, hazelnut biscuit Joconde and meringues. It’s an unforgettable cap to any special evening.

Santa is the center of all things holiday at Fashion Island. He greets children and families at the beautiful tree and in his cozy Coastal Cottage on Fashion Island’s Atrium Lawn. He listens intently to what visitors dream of finding under the tree, and he poses for holiday pictures. Children’s gift wishes can come true at Fashion Island and at retail centers across The Irvine Ranch, where the spirit of gifting and giving is in the air all year long.

Newport Beach traditions include the nightly tree lighting at Fashion Island, taking part in the Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade, giving and receiving classic gifts and enjoying performances of “A Christmas Carol” and “The Nutcracker.” Rosey Francis, 13, who performs as Clara in American Ballet Theatre’s “The Nutcracker” (scfta.org), is on pointe amid the beautiful gifts and decor at Neiman Marcus. Rosey is a third-generation Newport Beach native.

Katherine Collections Nutcracker, $379; Karen Didion Originals Santa Claus figures, $395-$610; and additional decor and ornaments all available at Neiman Marcus

Celebrate the season with stylish and stunning fashion, gifts and jewelry from Fashion Island. With a view of Newport Center, Anthropologie is festively decorated. Always a treasure trove for shoppers and gift-givers, from luxury items to stocking stuffers, Anthropologie at Fashion Island is among the most popular locations for the brand in the U.S.
